Farewell (Until Next Time)

It's been awhile, old friend.  Since we last saw each other, goodbyes were said, exams were taken, trips were made, and now a new life has begun.  Forgive me for one more entry -- it will be my last, and is probably my most heart-felt, so please indulge me.

At first, I hadn't planned on ever coming back here.  After leaving HK, the sadness in saying goodbye to such a great city, along with many of the great people I had been privileged to have befriended (or more), was too much to bear, that for the last couple months I've wanted to keep my experience frozen in time, untouched by the reality that I had left and didn't know when I would be back.  By not coming back to this website, I thought I could freeze time.

When I got back to the US, I was lucky in that there was something looming large in my life that could keep my mind off of HK.  Specifically, the biggest exam of my life.  In contrast to HK, where my brain essentially took a five-month vacation, I did nothing but study law upon return to America.  Class from 9am-1pm, eat lunch, study from 2:30 to 6:30, eat dinner, study from 7:30 to 10:30.  Repeat for every day, every week, all summer.  It was a terribly lonely time, as my days involved just me and my books in my apartment.  No TV, no internet, no phone.

After the bar exam, I traveled Europe for 5 weeks.  9 countries, 20 cities.  England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain.  Saw many great things, learned a lot about myself, had a great time.

Came back and moved to NYC, started work, now getting into a routine.  I am continually amazed how much this year alone has given to me.

But throughout the last five months since I've left HK, HK has always remained in my mind.  Small things trigger a certain place, a certain food, a certain person, a certain memory.  No matter how hard I've tried to forget, a bit of HK always comes back at the most random times and moments...and all I can do is smile, laugh, wince, get misty-eyed, all to myself.  I realize now that my HK experience is something that only I can ever fully appreciate.

So really, all I can say is that things happen for a reason.  I was meant to come to HK when I did, I was meant to see the things I saw, I was meant to meet the people I met, and I was meant to touch your life in the way I did in the short time I was in HK.  Who knows what the future holds, but given that our paths crossed from halfway across the world, perhaps it'll happen again.  And perhaps soon.

All in all, I just want to thank everyone who made my HK experience such an unforgettable one.  You opened up a new world for me, if just for a short span of time, and have made me a better person for it.  I hope I can find a way to repay the kindness that you have all showed me.  And to those with whom there was a falling out, I hope we can meet again so that we can start over.

And finally, to certain people in HK...you know who you are.  I think often of you, and hope to see you again soon.

Good-bye.

Oh, darn it.  I guess we're out of harm's way now.

I must finish this last paper!  (Guess who's not sleeping tonight?)

Yay, it's now up to a level 3 warning (out of a possible 8).  Here's the explanation of the current state:

"Strong winds are expected or blowing in Victoria Harbour, with a sustained speed of 41-62 km/h (kilometres per hour).  Gusts may exceed 110 km/h.  Winds are normally expected to become generally stronger in the harbour areas within 12 hours after the issuing of this signal.

Action - Secure all loose objects, particularly those on balconies and rooftops.  Flower pots and other objects likely to be blown away should be taken indoors.  Secure hoardings, scaffoldings and temporary structures.  Drains should be cleared to avoid blockage and overflows.  Listen to radio and TV announcements for further information about the storm."

Yay, my first typhoon warning in HK!  Admittedly, it's only a signal/level 1 warning, but still...how exciting!

Hmmm...where's my raincoat...
